Gayle Mill is just a 15 - 20 min walk from Herriots. The mill opened to visitors in April  2008 following extensive restoration work, as featured on the BBC "Restoration" series.
 
Guided tours of the mill are run 4 times a day and it's best to pre-book as only a limited number of spaces are available. For more details see http://www.gaylemill.org.uk/

Hardraw force is the highest single drop waterfall in England and is located in the grounds of the Green Dragon Pub in Hardraw (about a 30 minute walk from the centre of Hawes - just follow the signs for the Pennine Way, north!).
This walk has been made easier recently as some up & over stiles have been replaced with gates.
The Dales Countryside Museum is housed in the old railway station at the east end of the town and is managed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
 
The Museum tells the story of the the The Dales and its people both past and present. For opening times and more information click here (opens in a new window).
The Wensleydale Creamery is a scenic 10 to 15  minute walk along the Pennine way from Herriot's. 
 
The visitor centre features a museum and specialist cheese shop. The factory tour takes between 30 - 90 mins but as they don't make cheese every day it's best to check by phone first on 01969 667664

Aysgarth Falls
Aysgarth Falls are about 15 mins drive (east) of Hawes.
 
A riverside walk links the upper, middle and lower falls.
Castle Bolton
Castle Bolton is on the north side of the river Ure near Aysgarth in Wensleydale. With stunning views over Wensleydale & loads of history to soak up it's a great place to visit.
Once running the length of Wensleydale linking Northallerton on the east coast main line to Garsdale  on the Settle to Carlisle line, the Wensleydale railway now runs only as far as Redmire.

The market town of Sedbergh lies about a 30 minute drive along the A684 to the west of Hawes.
 
Sedbergh is known as the "Booktown" (what's a book town?) of England & celebrates this with a  Festival of Books and Drama each August.

With its wonderful history and outstanding collections there is always something to inspire at The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle.

Richmond lies just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is about a 50 minute drive from Hawes. The town was recently named "Great town of the Year 2009". One of the newer features is the Old Station which has recently been converted and restored and now features a 2 screen cinema, cafe and a series of small artisan shops.  The old station is located just on the edge of town next to the swimming pool. 
Choosing Hawes as a base for a touring holiday of the Yorkshire Dales has the added bonus of easy access to the Lake District.  Kendal & Windermere in the Lake Distrtct National Park are only about an hours drive away.
